SIX NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

1985 1987 1999 2001 2007

2008

The 1985 Georgia squad, led by seniors in the top four positions, was perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second-straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over teammate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time All-American, was No. 3. The rest of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Pernfors (UGA) d. Kures (UCLA) 6-2, 6-3 No. 2 - Bezecny (UGA) d. Klaparda (UCLA) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 No. 3 - Miller (UGA) d. Pearce (UCLA) 6-4, 6-4 No. 4 - Basham (UCLA) d. Frey (UGA) 6-1, 7-5 No. 5 - Johnson (UGA) d. Greenwood (UCLA) 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 No. 6 - Carter (UGA) d. Diller (UCLA) 7-6, 3-6, 6-3

The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the conference round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 5-1 No. 1 - Johnson (UGA) d. Nahirney (UCLA) 4-6, 1-2, ret. No. 2 - Enochs (UGA) d. Farrow (UCLA) 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 No. 3 - Boytim (UGA) d. The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64-team tournament as the No. 10 seed. Through the course of the regional and championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

Final: Georgia def. UCLA 4-3 No. 1 - Grinda (UCLA) d. Hemeda (UGA) 6-4,6-7(4),6-4 No. 2 - Fleishman (UCLA) d. Corrales (UGA) 6-3,6-3 No. 3 - Carlson (UGA) d. The 2001 Bulldogs etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history and also the NCAA record books as just the second program to win the title, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. Georgia rode a 25-match winning streak through the tournament to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point, but lost the first set in three singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.

Final: Georgia def. Tennessee, 4-1 No. 1 - M. Boeker (UGA) vs. Parsons (UT), 1-6, 6-4, 5-5, DNF No. 2 - Toledo (UT) d. Hodge (UGA) 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 No. 3 - Joseph (UGA) d. The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA title on their home court. The crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tournament. Georgia was so dominant that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, the opposition gained two points only twice, and Georgia registered a total of 22 shutouts.

Final: Georgia def. Illinois, 4-0 No. 1 - Isner (UGA) d. Anderson (ILL) 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) No. 2 - Flores (UGA) vs. Rowe (ILL) 6-7 (6-8), 2-4, DNF No. 3 - Helgeson (UGA) vs. Spicijaric (ILL) 7-6 (7-4), 4-2, DNF No. 4 - Omerzel (UGA) d. The 2008 Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford in 1997-98. Georgia officially captured the title by defeating Texas in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia, 4-3. On the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

Georgia tennis aims to carry on SEC tradition Chip Towers | Atlanta Journal Constitution | April 20, 2022 ATHENS — SEC teams will have to walk through a bunch of trophies when they enter Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex for the SEC Tournament this week. Nobody has won more titles than the Bulldogs. They count 41 championships between the man for whom the facility is named and the current coach, Manuel Diaz. Thirty-one of those are regular-season championships and 10 are tourney titles. That’s twice the number of any other team. But Georgia hasn’t nabbed many lately – none since 2017 – and it’s not favored to this year. Florida and Tennessee carry that distinction. But crazier things have happened when it comes to the rich tradition that is UGA tennis, and there’s a bit of nostalgia wafting through the weeping willows this year. The Bulldogs are hosting a major tennis event for the first time since storied Henry Feild Stadium underwent an $8.5 million renovation in 2020. The grandstand known for packing in more than 3,000 fans during some NCAA Tournaments has been redone in sturdy concrete now. It awaits its biggest crowd yet. “We’ve had some great crowds already,” Diaz said as UGA staff readied the facility Monday. “We had about 2,000 fans at an earlier match this year. It’s been great.” The Bulldogs hope those fans can lift their play this week. Georgia (17-6, 9-3 SEC) had to win its final two matches against Alabama and Auburn to finish fourth in the regular season. The good news is that gave the Bulldogs one of the four double-byes into Friday’s quarterfinals. The bad news is they’ll likely draw No. 5-ranked Tennessee in their first match. Don’t let the Volunteers’ No. 5 seeding fool you. They were ranked No. 1 in the nation before a foot injury sidelined Johannus Monday, the country’s No. 4-ranked singles player, in early March. The Vols lost four matches after that, including once to undefeated Florida. Well, Monday is back in action now for the Vols. On Thursday, they will play No. 13 Alabama, which defeated No. 12 Vanderbilt 4-3 in a play-in match Wednesday. If Tennessee wins as expected, it will face off with Georgia on the stadium courts in the quarterfinals. “If that happens, it’s going to be a huge match,” Diaz said. “We’ll need that home-court advantage, and we’ll need to play our best match. That’s what we’re hoping to do.” Georgia beat the Monday-less Vols 4-2 in Knoxville on March 20. But then the Bulldogs turned around and lost to Texas A&M on the road a week later. That loss and one to Kentucky the day after an early-April snowfall have dogged Georgia all season. Their other SEC loss was to No. 3-ranked Florida on March 11 in Athens. “If healthy, we can compete and beat anybody,” said Diaz, Georgia’s coach for 36 seasons. “Health is a big part of it. We’ve struggled a little bit with that. But we’re growing, and we’re playing well right now. We haven’t played our best yet.” The Bulldogs are surviving on the strength of two graduate transfers, Tristan McCormick from Notre Dame and Hamish Stewart from Tulane (by way of Scotland). They’ve stabilized the top of the Bulldogs’ lineup in both singles and doubles. McCormick has been dealing with some knee issues, so his pre-tournament work this week has been limited. Also, the Bulldogs are hoping Trent Bryde, once a stalwart at No. 1 singles, can continue to round back into form. He has bounced all around the lineup his senior season. With 14 of his matches coming at the No. 4 spot, he enters the tournament with a 9-13 singles record. Play at No. 6 has been spotty. The fiery Stewart has picked up the slack at No. 1. He’s 17-6 in dual matches this spring. “He hates to lose,” Diaz said of Stewart. “That’s what makes him special. He’ll find a way to raise his game. He’s 35

been a tremendous asset and a tremendous leader for us all year, along with Tristan.” Strong doubles play will be key. The Bulldogs have been unpredictable lately in doubles. And since the NCAA went to a single-six-game set format a few years ago, anything can happen as three sets of teams battle for a single match point. New rankings are due out Wednesday but, as it stands, the No. 11 Bulldogs are fifth among the ranked SEC teams. Florida comes in No. 3, followed by No. 5 Tennessee, No. 9 South Carolina and No. 10 Kentucky. Texas A&M is 21st and Auburn 28th. “Everybody’s good; everybody’s good,” Diaz said. “It’s a tough, rough league.”

Georgia mens tennis defeats No.12 Texas 4-3 Ayaan Bakaly | The Red & Black | March 2, 2022 The Georgia men’s tennis team, coming off of an impressive 6-1 victory against Mercer on Monday, continued their victorious ways on Tuesday, as they took down No. 12 Texas 4-3 at a packed Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia. Georgia once again got off to a terrific start as the 42nd-ranked doubles duo of Blake Croyder and Erik Grevelius defeated Micah Braswell and Chih Chi Huang, 6-2. The No. 41 doubles duo of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs as they defeated UT’s Siem Woldeab and Pierre-Yves Bailly, 6-2. “All three of our doubles teams played extremely well today and put a lot of pressure on Texas,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. Texas would go on to tie the match at one after Bryde lost to Texas’ Eliot Spizzirri in straight sets 4-6, 4-6. 76th-ranked Croyder came back answering for the Bulldogs, as he beat Cleeve Harper in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Thomas Paulsell added to his record after posting his second straight win in singles play, as he defeated Woldeab 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7) to give UGA a 3-1 lead. But Texas once again had an answer for Georgia. Tristan McCormick started off well by winning his first set 6-4 but would go on to lose the next two sets 2-6, 2-6. UGA’s Henning also got off to a fantastic start in what was a close match, winning the first set 6-4, but then lost the next two sets 6-7 (5), 2-6. With one match left, each team was level at three points. But if there is one thing onlookers have learned from this season’s Georgia team, it’s that the Bulldogs usually finish the job with the meet on the line. Captain Hamish Stewart sealed the Bulldogs’ 4-3 victory by upsetting No. 17 Bailly on court one in straight sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. “That [win] felt really good,” a smiling Stewart said after the match.. “I’ve been in that situation once before and I lost it, so it feels really good to win one at three-all. It was one of the best feelings ever.” Diaz had the following to say of Stewart’s recent performance. “[There’s] a lot of heart there. He’s really been stepping up and playing some awesome tennis, but more importantly, just leading by example,” Diaz said. “In the tough moments, right now, he’s just fighting his heart out and playing high-caliber tennis when it matters most.” Georgia will start SEC play when it travels to Nashville for its conference opener against Vanderbilt on March 4 at 3 P.M.

Tristan McCormick leads men’s tennis as Georgia heads for SEC Tournament Ayaan Bakaly | The Red & Black | April 21, 2022 The Georgia men’s tennis team wrapped up the regular season and finished with an overall record of 17-6 while going 9-3 in conference play. Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz has praised his experienced players such as graduate transfer Tristan McCormick. McCormick, a former five-star recruit out of the Dwight School, played four years at Notre Dame before transferring to Georgia. Although he hasn’t been on the team long, McCormick has shown focus, leadership and professionalism, Diaz said. McCormick was heavily influenced at a young age by his older brother, Harrison, who played tennis for Army, and his older sister, Genevieve, who also played for Army. When asked about role models, McCormick said, “I would say I always looked up to [Roger] Federer, but these days I watch a lot of [Stefanos] Tsitsipas and [Dominic] Thiem and, I guess [Stan] Wawrinka.” As a senior at Notre Dame, McCormick was the 2020 ITA Fall Circuit Champion and also clinched an NCAA championship doubles berth with his partner Axel Nefve. They would go on to lose in the first round ending McCormick’s career at Notre Dame. With an opportunity to play elsewhere as a graduate transfer, McCormick decided to bring his talents to Athens. “I just, I mean, it [UGA] just has so much history and the culture is just success and winning,” McCormick said. “And Manny [Manuel Diaz] has so much experience and Jamie [Hunt] as well. I just felt like I wanted to be somewhere where I knew that I was going to be challenged every day by the coaches and by my peers and somewhere where that has a strong history of success.” For many, it can be tough transitioning from schools you have spent many years at. But for McCormick that was not the case. “I mean, it’s been a lot of fun,” McCormick said. “It’s been fun to get to know a new team and also kind of meet new fans. I’ve met and gotten to talk to some fans and we just get so much support at Georgia, so it’s been fun to play in front of the crowds that we’ve gotten.”

McCormick has been nominated captain on numerous occasions and has been praised by head coach Diaz for his experience and leadership. “In our locker room, he’s done a terrific job,” Diaz said. “He is just exerting some leadership and using his experience in that regard. In a very quick fashion, he came in and became a huge part of what we’re trying to accomplish this year. He brought a level of professionalism and focus. Tremendous for our guys.” McCormick finished the regular season 18-7 overall and 15-5 in dual play. “He’s given us great flexibility,” said Diaz when asked about McCormick’s singles performance. “He started at number four, with great success, has moved up to three, and then has even played some at number two. So the fact that he actually has improved so much this year has really been an incredible blessing because it’s given us a lot more flexibility in our lineup.” McCormick and fellow graduate transfer Hamish Stewart have both won some crucial points for Georgia and have brought a lot to the table with their experience. In doubles play, the duo of McCormick and Stewart are 10-10 overall on the year. When asked about the impact McCormick and Stewart have had on the culture, Diaz said that they have contributed a great deal. “They have both come in and not only quickly understood our culture, but they both have added a great deal to our culture and the way they go about their practices, how hungry they are, and their passion for the game that both possess,” Diaz said. Experience has played a tremendous role in Georgia’s success this year. Players like McCormick, Stewart, Blake Croyder, Philip Henning and Trent Bryde to name a few have come up big in do-or-die situations for this team. With these veterans on the roster, Georgia will look to bring home its ninth national championship.

Georgia men’s tennis beats LSU 4-0 Ayaan Bakaly | The Red & Black | April 4, 2022 The Georgia men’s tennis team came back to a packed Dan Magill Tennis Complex filled with 2,000 spectators including football head coach Kirby Smart, as they took on the 38th ranked LSU Tigers and dominated them with a score of 4-0. The 26th ranked senior duo of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning got things rolling for the Bulldogs in doubles play as they faced off against Boris Kozlov and Nick Watson defeating them 6-2. As a duo, Bryde and Henning are on a five-match win streak. The grad transfer duo of Tristan McCormick and Hamish Stewart took on Gabriel Diaz Freire and Kent Hunter on court one. McCormick and Stewart defeated LSU’s duo with a score of 6-3 to give Georgia the early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs stayed in the driver’s seat as they started singles play. Senior Bryde, who was in command of his match the whole way against Joao Graco, defeated him on court four with a score of 6-3, 6-2. This extended Georgia’s lead to 2-0.

Blake Croyder added another point for the Bulldogs on court five, as he took on Kozlov and defeated him in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Croyder is now 20-7 overall in singles play and 12-3 in dual play. Stewart led Georgia home on court one as he defeated Vlad Lobak in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. The 17th ranked Stewart is now 7-3 in his last 10 singles matches and is also on a three-match win streak. “Our guys came out and they were focused,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “They know that every match is so critical. We are focused on continuing to make progress and earn as good a seed in the SEC tournament as we can — that is crucial. We have a big weekend ahead and we turn our attention to Kentucky. We know that they are a top team, and they are going to be a huge challenge on the road.” The ninth-ranked Bulldogs will travel up to Lexington, Kentucky to face off against the 12th ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m.

Quick Chat: Tristan McCormick John Frierson | UGAAA | April 14, 2022 Georgia’s Tristan McCormick is the rare Bulldog men’s tennis player that might get mistaken for a member of the football team. The well-built 6-foot-4 graduate student, a transfer from Notre Dame, has size and strength, and he uses them to his advantage on the court. McCormick, from Berwyn, Penn., near Philadelphia, has made an immediate impact with the Bulldogs. This spring, he’s teamed up with fellow fifth-year player Hamish Stewart to form Georgia’s No. 1 doubles team and McCormick has played matches at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles, going a combined 14-4 in completed matches. McCormick has also made a difference off the court and on Thursday was named to the SEC’s Community Service Team. Back in 2017, when the Georgia football team made its now-legendary trip up to South Bend, Ind., to play the Fighting Irish, McCormick was in the stands as Bulldog fans packed Notre Dame Stadium and saw Georgia pull out a 20-19 win. McCormick remains loyal to the Fighting Irish football program, as you might expect, but he’s very happy to be playing for the Bulldogs. During a recent Quick Chat, McCormick talked about that 2017 football game, his start in tennis, his funniest teammates, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say: Frierson: When you come to Georgia from Notre Dame, are you immediately cheering for the Bulldogs in football? McCormick: No, I still am a Notre Dame football fan, much to my coaches’ dismay. I think it makes sense — I was a huge Notre Dame fan, so it would feel weird to cheer for Georgia more than Notre Dame after I was just there for four years. I was in the same classes as some of the football players, I knew them, and I was so into it. Frierson: Were you at the game in South Bend in 2017? McCormick: I was. It was 20-19 and that was the only home game I saw Notre Dame lose in my time there. That was the only home game they lost in the four years I was there. It was a great game and there were so many Georgia fans, it was kind of crazy. Frierson: Given your size, did you ever play football? McCormick: No, never. I kind of wish I did but I played baseball, soccer and tennis. I was focused mainly on tennis from the get-go. Frierson: When you think of home, what comes to mind? McCormick: I’m from Philadelphia but now my parents have moved full-time to Florida, so now our family spends a lot of time in Naples, Fla.; we don’t really spend much time in Philadelphia anymore. But I loved growing up in Philadelphia and I love spending time in Florida now. I’m a warm-weather guy, I like it to be warm, so Athens was a nice changeup from what I had in South Bend, Ind., for sure. There’s no escaping the winter’s there, you have to walk to class and get out in it. There’s no escaping the cold, you have to go out and brave it every day. Frierson: Did you try to model your game after any player in particular? McCormick: I got the inspiration to play from my siblings. I have an older brother and an older sister and they actually both played at West Point (Army), and they were the reason I first started playing. When I was young, they were already playing kind of seriously. Of course, Roger Federer was my first big inspiration, and he’s still my inspiration to this day. He’s just the man. Frierson: If you could steal one shot from any player ever, what would it be? There’s a lot to choose from, like stealing John Isner’s serve or something.

40

McCormick: I wouldn’t steal Isner’s serve, I don’t think. I think I’ll keep my serve and steal a Stan Wawrinka backhand. I still like my forehand, I wouldn’t want to give it up, and I like my serve, so if I can level my backhand up to Stan’s level, that would be great. Frierson: Do you watch much tennis on TV or do you get your fill out here on the courts every day? McCormick: I watch a lot of tennis. One, because I’m just a fan, but also because I think it helps me. I think a lot of guys on our team do it, just because we’re into it and it helps us. If you’re watching the tendencies of the best players, I think you can pick up on those things. Frierson: Have you ever hit with a wooden racket? McCormick: I have — it’s different. You’ve got to keep the plane (of the face) more level and you can’t do too much with it. You can’t whip it around like you can with modern rackets. Frierson: Who is the funniest guy on the team? McCormick: Probably Hamish — Hamish and Blake (Croyder) for sure. Hamish is the funniest on-court, I think, because he’s just absurd. He’s a hothead and he has no filter, so he’s really funny. He’s Scottish so it’s in their blood, I think, to just say whatever comes to their mind. Blake, he’s able to keep it pretty light and he’s always in a good humor. (This Q&A was lightly edited for length and clarity.)

Quick Chat: Hamish Stewart John Frierson | UGAAA | March 23, 2022 Hamish Stewart rolled up to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on a sunny Tuesday afternoon with a smile on his face. The Georgia men’s tennis graduate student was on his electric scooter, perhaps the best way to get around an increasingly crowded city and campus. A 6-foot-3 native of Glasgow, Scotland, Stewart joined the Bulldogs this season after four good years at Tulane. He reached as high as No. 21 in the country in singles and doubles as a senior with the Green Wave, before coming to Georgia. He’s currently playing No. 1 in singles and doubles for the seventh-ranked Bulldogs and is ranked No. 17 in this week’s singles rankings. During our Quick Chat Tuesday, two days after the Bulldogs went to Knoxville and knocked off the fourth-ranked Volunteers (there are four SEC teams in the top 7: No. 2 Florida, No. 4 Tennessee, No. 6 South Carolina and No. 7 UGA), Stewart talked about his start in tennis, the importance of Andy Murray in Scotland, attending his first Georgia football game, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say: Frierson: How old were you when you started playing tennis and what got you interested in the sport? Stewart: I probably started playing when I was 5 or 6 — my older brothers and I would go down to the local sports club and we’d play all different types of sports. One of my brothers played a little more tennis than the other and we always played together. Frierson: Is it possible to measure the impact that Andy Murray on tennis in Scotland? Stewart: I don’t think so. It’s massive, though. We all love him and I have a ton of respect for him. He’s grown it massively, a huge amount for sure. Frierson: I have so much respect for him and the way he’s still out there competing with a new hip, just because he loves to play and compete. Stewart: He’s an absolute warrior and it’s a shame to see him maybe not be able to play the same way he used to. Frierson: If you could steal a shot from any player in history, is there one that comes to mind? Stewart: That’s a tough one. I would say a (Pete) Sampras serve, maybe, or a (Boris) Becker serve. Something like that. Frierson: I’m guessing you’ve watched those guys on YouTube because you’re a little young to have seen them play in their primes. Stewart: My coach growing up was a huge Sampras fan, especially his serve, so he’s tried to teach me a little bit of that. It’s nowhere near it but my coach showed me one or two things. Frierson: What other sports did you play growing up? Were you good enough at anything that you considered pursuing that over tennis? Stewart: I always dabbled in a lot of sports. I really enjoyed golf but I never gave it enough time because of tennis. I played rugby, I was just too small and I got battered around [laughs]. I wish I grew quicker but I didn’t, which is a shame. I played cricket a little bit, but my heart and soul wasn’t in cricket. Frierson: At what age did you start thinking about coming to college in the U.S.? Stewart: I wasn’t outstanding as a junior, I wasn’t great — I was OK but I wouldn’t have been recruited to Georgia or anything. I started thinking about it when I was 15 or 16, I thought it would be a great idea, and then when I was 16, 17 I was in a position to finally do it. Frierson: What was it like to go from Glasgow to New Orleans?

42

Stewart: It was very different. New Orleans is a very interesting place; I loved it but it was a big adjustment at first. I really enjoyed my four years there but it wasn’t the biggest sports school and for my last year I wanted to experience a big sports school. Frierson: What was your first Georgia football game like? I bet it was a little bit different from a Tulane game. Stewart: I was definitely different from a Tulane game. It was incredible. I remember we all tailgated before the game and it was such an amazing day — I loved it. I love football now. Frierson: When did you first learn the rules of American football? Or are you still figuring all that out? Stewart: I learned a little bit before I got to college just through video games and stuff. Being in New Orleans, when I got there the Saints were still really good, so on Sundays everyone would watch the Saints. I’d always watch them and I got a good grasp of it. I grew to love college football and I’d always watch other teams. Frierson: When you meet people around here and they hear your accent, where do they think you’re from? Stewart: Ireland, almost always Ireland. They think I’m either English or Irish. Some people guess it right first but Irish is usually the first one they got to. Frierson: Are you amazed at where tennis has taken you and the life experiences you’ve had because of it? Stewart: Yeah, I saw so many places in Europe as a junior, which was fun, and then coming out here, with how much we travel you get to see so much of the country. When I first got recruited, I never thought I’d end up at the University of Georgia, but it became a reality. I remember I played a tournament here my junior year and I just thought this place was incredible. When they reached out for me to potentially come here, I was like, wow. I remember coming here and falling in love with the place. I thought it was incredible. (This Q&A was lightly edited for length and clarity.)

Georgia men’s tennis upsets No. 4 Tennessee, 4-2 Ayaan Bakaly | The Red & Black | March 23, 2022 The No. 8 ranked Georgia Men’s Tennis team traveled up to Knoxville, Tennessee to take on Tennessee, and handed the Volunteers their fifth loss of the season defeating them, 4-2. The 62nd ranked doubles duo of senior Blake Croyder and junior Erik Grevelius got the Bulldogs off to a great start as they took down Tennessee’s Martim Prata and Mark Wallner, 6-2. UGA clinched the doubles point on court two as Trent Bryde and Philip Henning defeated the 16th ranked doubles duo of Shunsuke Mitsui and Emile Hudd, 7-6 (7-4). The Bulldogs carried their momentum into singles play as captain Tristan McCormick defeated Angel Diaz in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, extending Georgia’s lead to 2-0. McCormick, who has been brilliant as of late for the Bulldogs, is now 5-0 in SEC singles play. On court five, Croyder added on to UGA’s lead as he defeated Prata 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). With the Bulldogs up 3-0, they needed one more win to clinch the match. This did not happen as easily as the Bulldogs would have liked. Tennessee came roaring back on court two as the 55th ranked singles player Hudd took down Henning 3-6, 6-4, 3-6. The Volunteers added another point as Connor Gannon made an impressive comeback against freshman Miguel Perez Peña after he had lost the first set 6-1, but then won the next two sets 3-6, 3-6, making the score 3-2. As we have seen in past matches, this Georgia team is not phased by adversity. Senior Trent Bryde crushed the Volunteer’s hopes of making a comeback as he had an impressive 7-5 first set win, had a little bit of a scare in the second set losing 6-7 (5-7), but clutched up in the third set and won his match with a score of 6-2 against Mitsui, giving UGA the 4-2 victory. The Bulldogs are now 13-4 overall, 5-1 in SEC play, will stay on the road, and travel to College Station, Texas to take on No. 22 Texas A&M on March 27th at 2 p.m.

No. 9 Georgia squeaks past Georgia Tech in classic tennis matchup Ken Sugiura | The Atlanta Journal-Constitution | February 14, 2022 Georgia senior Tristan McCormick is in his fifth year of playing college tennis, possessed of a bank of literally hundreds of matches in his lifetime. Sunday afternoon, in his first Georgia-Georgia Tech match – he is a grad transfer from Notre Dame – he couldn’t help but feel the weight of the rivalry. McCormick was dueling across the court with Tech’s Chen Dong. The team match was tied at 3. The outcome of the men’s tennis playing of “Clean Old-Fashioned Hate” rode on their rackets. About 220 fans, roughly split 50/50 and a little less than twice the usual attendance, packed into Tech’s Ken Byers Tennis Complex, their cheers bouncing off the roof and courts of the indoor facility. Their teammates, having already finished and the fate of the match now out of their hands, watched from the next court. “So I think it would have been weird if I was able to just not be nervous,” McCormick told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Of course, you’re going to be extremely nervous. I was kind of shaking a little bit at times.” Really, actually shaking? “A little bit, for sure.” McCormick and the Bulldogs ultimately prevailed in dramatic fashion, the sort of theater that has often defined the rivalry across all sports. McCormick served out for the match and won 7-5, 7-5. After losing the doubles point to fall behind 0-1, the Yellow Jackets won the first three singles matches to go up 3-1 and need just one more match to go their way. Georgia rallied by winning the final three, the last from McCormick. “We took it to ‘em in three of the matches in singles, and they didn’t fold,” Tech coach Kenny Thorne said. On paper, the Bulldogs were clear favorites. Besides the Bulldogs’ No. 9 national ranking, coach Manny Diaz rolled out three players ranked in the top 25 for singles – Hamish Stewart (19th), Trent Bryde (23rd) and Philip Henning (25th) – and two more in the top 104. Tech had one player in the top 125, Andres Martin at No. 12. The Jackets were 3-3, dropping their most recent three, all to top-25 teams. Diaz was braced for a stern test. “He gets the most out of his teams every year, and we can expect a great battle,” Diaz said of Thorne, his Tech counterpart. “It doesn’t matter what the rankings are, who’s favored and who’s supposed to win. You better bring it because it goes out the window when we play each other.” To attempt to inspire his team to match Tech’s fight, Diaz read a message from a Bulldogs tennis legend Saturday night. Diaz is on a group text with about 75 former letter winners, including greats John Isner and Mikael Pernfors. Another is Norman Holmes, an NCAA doubles champion for the Bulldogs in 1969 and one of the team’s first two All-Americans. In the note, Holmes “talked about how when he got to Georgia, Georgia Tech was on top of the world,” Diaz said. “They were top five in the nation, and they had the tradition and they had the facilities, and Georgia was regarded as a little hick town university kind of thing.” Things have changed. UGA has made every NCAA Tournament since 1984 and won the title six times, four with Diaz. Thorne, now in his 24th year at Tech, has built a formidable team, one that has made 13 NCAA trips, but has largely come up short against its rival from Athens. Diaz is now 34-1 against Tech, with a Thorne-led team recording the one win in 2011. Regardless, the Jackets have often managed to push the Bulldogs. Besides 2011, perhaps never more so than Sunday. Players on both sides were primed. Martin is from Flowery Branch but did not experience the rivalry much growing up. He has caught on. “Georgia does a good job of bringing as many fans as they can to our place,” he said. “We can definitely feel that. 48

Some of the (Georgia fans) give you a little dirty look in the stands, but you’ve got to embrace it. You’ve got to love it.” Martin defeated Henning at first singles 7-5, 6-1 that gave Tech a 2-1 lead after Keshav Chopra upset Bryde at third singles 6-3, 6-2 for Tech’s first point after losing the doubles point to Georgia. The next point came from Brandon McKinney at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1 over Miguel Perez Pena. Now Tech was one match away from a monumental upset. At fifth singles, Georgia’s Blake Croyder was well aware. “I’m one of the guys who looks at all the scores on all the different courts, so I’m always keeping up,” Croyder said. “I knew we were down, but I just knew that I had to try and get off as fast as I could, try and give us a little more momentum.” The Tech-Georgia rivalry is not new for Croyder, from Marietta. He had actually served as a ball boy at a Tech-Georgia match at Tech in 2011. It was Diaz’s lone loss to the Jackets. “Seeing how much it meant to (Tech) just really made it eye-opening on how cool college tennis really is,” he said. Croyder won his match 6-4, 6-1 over Pablo Schelcher to cut the deficit to 3-2. At No. 2 singles, Stewart won next, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 over Marcus McDaniel to tie the match at 3 and leave it up to McCormick and Dong. A sophomore from Australia, Dong dropped the first set 7-5 and was down 3-1 in the second before rallying. He was down 5-4 with McCormick serving for the match but managed to break to get to 5-5 before McCormick broke back and then won the match on his serve. “Chen never went away,” Thorne said. “That’s a good credit to the character of the team, and that’s very important for us moving forward.” McCormick was in the position of trying to uphold decades of UGA dominance. He had been in a similar position before. At Notre Dame, he was in the last match in a matchup with rival Indiana before falling in three sets. Plus, he was there when Diaz told the team about the rivalry’s history. “I knew how much was riding on it, and I certainly didn’t want to be the guy to screw that up for UGA,” he said.
