Boling Earns Bronze In Long Jump To Start NCAA Indoors

March 11, 2022 | Track & Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Georgia junior Matthew Boling secured third in the long jump to highlight the opening day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday.

Boling bettered his seventh-place finish in the long jump from the 2021 meet to earn a spot in the top three this year. Bouncing between the 60-meter dash and 200m semifinals, Boling put the first points on the scoreboard for Georgia after surging into third place in the fifth of six long jump rounds.

Where They Stand: Thanks to Boling's eight points, the Bulldogs are tied for 11th with another day of action to go.  Princeton (20), Tennessee (18) and Northern Arizona (17) are currently in the top three through five scoring events.

Through four of seven events in the heptathlon, junior Kyle Garland left the Crossplex with a 30-point overall lead thanks to his 3,592 points.  This was two points ahead of his meet record day one at the Southeastern Conference Championships two weeks ago and 36 points behind his all-time collegiate best day one scored at the 2022 Razorback Invitational.

The Bulldogs are the defending champions in the heptathlon after former Bulldog Karel Tilga scored 6,264 (No. 3 all-time collegiate performer/performance) to edge Garland (6,200) for the 2021 NCAA title.  While Devon Williams also captured the 2017 crown for Georgia, the Bulldogs have had 18 scoring First Team All-Americans in the event since 2012.

Boling, a native of Houston, Texas, also qualified for the final round in a pair of events on the track.  He qualified automatically for Saturday's 60m final with the fastest time of his career and while taking a break from his long jump competition.  After completing the long jump as the bronze medalist, he took to lane six on the oval in the second heat and punched his ticket to the 200m final.

Saturday's Start: Garland begins the final three events of the heptathlon (60m hurdles, pole vault, 1000m) at 11 a.m. ET to begin day two for the Bulldogs.  Freshman Elena Kulichenko, who was the SEC Female Freshman Athlete of the Year, high jumps at 1:30 p.m. to start the open events while Boling returns to the track for the 60m final at 5:10 p.m.

The Lowdown: In what shaped up to be a busy and productive hour and a half for Boling, he scored for the second straight year in the long jump.  He rapidly took his first two tries and was leading when he stepped over to the 60m track to qualify in the NCAA's shortest sprint.  After slipping to fourth after four long jump rounds, Boling took off for his top effort of the day (7.86 meters/25 feet, 9 ½ inches) and it held for the bronze medal.  Minutes after that finale, Boling returned to the track and sped to the fastest finish in the 200m semifinal to join the final's field in that event.

Boling provided the Bulldogs with a pair of qualifiers on Friday.  Standing in second in the long jump after his second attempt, Boling moved from the runway to the center-track 60m for his semifinal.  Following a green card/no-foul restart for his race and then a disqualification of national leader and Texas Tech freshman Terrence Jones, Boling won the second heat with a personal best 6.56 to have the second-fastest qualifying time overall.  This also improved his No. 2 spot in the Bulldog record books.  Boling will race in the 60m final at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday.  Also of note, the nation's No. 2 60m sprinter this season, Oregon freshman Micah Williams, had a false start and was disqualified in the first heat.

Minutes after his third-place finish in the long jump was solidified, Boling quickly readied for the 200m semifinals.  He ran out of the second group and won easily with a 20.42.  The defending NCAA 200m champion finished with the fastest qualifying time and will take the track for the final at 5:50 p.m. on day two.

Garland began his third heptathlon of the season by taking sixth in the 60m.  He shot across the finish line in 6.97 to earn 893 points, which trailed the leader by 95 points headed into the long jump.  Garland crept into third place overall following the second event after his second attempt measured 7.41m/24-3.75 for second.  He was 53 points behind second place at this point and 63 behind the leader.

Launching his second effort in the shot put 15.38m/50-5.50, Garland remained in third place following the third event.  He was 45 points behind second and 84 short of the leader.

Garland started his high jump with a pattern of a first attempt clearance and then a second try clearance during his first five heights.  But after going over the bar at 2.12m/6-11.50 on his final try, he then locked down a career best of 2.18m/7-1.75.  This height put him in a 30-point lead overall over Texas' Leo Neugebauer and moved him into a tie for No. 10 on the school's all-time top-10 list in the high jump. Garland's performance marks the fourth time he has eclipsed 7 feet in his career.

The only Lady Bulldog competitor on Friday was senior Titiana Marsh in the long jump.  Marsh, who will be lining up in the triple jump on day two, improved on her second and third attempts, topping out at 20-6.50.  She finished 10th with the top nine advancing to the final's last three rounds.

Senior Elija Godwin, who will return in the 4x400m relay on Saturday, finished 14th in the 400m semifinal with a 47.18.
